The Centre told the Supreme Court on Monday that it took a conscious decision to not give any grace period for citizens to deposit their demonetised notes after the cut-off date of December 30, 2016.
Doing so would have defeated the very purpose of demonetization, the government said.
It was replying to the Supreme Court’s appeal to open a window for genuine people, like the terminally ill and invalids, to name a few, who were unable to deposit their demonetised Rs. 1,000 and Rs. 500 notes between November 9 and December 30 last year.
